Time and Time Zone

Uruguayan summer and winter is opposite that of countries in the northern hemisphere, meaning that Uruguay sets its clocks forward at roughly the same times that northern hemisphere countries set their clocks back. This produces some interesting time zone differences that vary based on the time of year. The government has decreed that:

  • Daylight savings time is observed starting the first Sunday in October, where clocks are set forward an hour. The time zone is GMT minus two hours (UTC-2).
  • Standard time returns the second Sunday in March, where clocks are set back an hour. The time zone is GMT minus three hours (UTC-3).

The Uruguayan government previously modified the time zones for a one-year period from 2004-2005, but those changes are no longer in effect.

For example, Los Angeles is in the US-Pacific time zone, which is UTC-8 (during standard time) or UTC-7 (during daylight time). In the northern hemisphere summer, Uruguay will be four hours ahead, but in the northern hemisphere winter, Uruguay will instead be six hours ahead. (There may also be a smaller number of intermediate number of weeks, where one of the countries has not yet switched back to standard time, where the time one difference is only five hours.)
